Gov. Jan Brewer appointed Ron Shoopman to an eight-year term on the Arizona Board of Regents in March 2014. He currently serves as treasurer of the board and as chair of the Audit Committee. He is a member of the Finance, Capital and Resources Committee, Research and Health Sciences Committee, Academic Affairs and Educational Attainment Committee, and chair of the Regents Award Selection Committee. Regent Shoopman also represents the Arizona Board of Regents on the Campus Research Corporation Board. Regent Shoopman was president of the Southern Arizona Leadership Council (SALC) from 2004 to 2018. Under his leadership, the group doubled in size and compiled an impressive list of accomplishments. The nearly 120 CEO’s of SALC are actively involved in creating a vibrant future for the Tucson region and state of Arizona by engaging the critical issues of education, infrastructure, healthcare, governance as well as science and technology.
Regent Shoopman is a former General Officer and Wing Commander of the 162nd Fighter Wing, commanding the International F-16 Training Wing for the United States Air Force. His civilian experience includes seven years with Gates Learjet Corporation as sales manager for the central U.S., a pilot for Continental Airlines and an instructor pilot and manager for Flight Safety International.
Regent Shoopman received numerous Air Force Awards including the Legion of Merit. Other recognition includes the Governor’s 2009 Celebration of Innovation McWhortor Community Service Leader of the Year and the 2012 Tucson Father of the Year. Regent Shoopman serves the Tucson community and state of Arizona on multiple boards and committees. His additional board service includes the Health Information Network of Arizona, Arizona Business and Education Coalition and Tucson Values Teachers. Regent Shoopman serves on the Leadership Council for the Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy and is immediate past chair of the state Bioscience Roadmap Steering Committee. He actively supports Arizona’s military installations including men and women in uniform and Arizona Veterans.
He received professional military education at the Air War College and the Air Command and Staff College, and received his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University in Aeronautical Technology.
