Tucson’s economy has not closed down because of the Coronavirus. And one of the driving forces is the Tucson Economic Initiatives Office, as they have been the leaders in “Navigating the Impacts of COVID-19 for Small Businesses” – a weekly webinar series participated in by hundreds of local business people over the past month, providing resources, answers, and encouragement.

Barbra Coffee has been the Director of Tucson Economic Initiatives since February, 2019. She is a visionary and a true driving force who has been an economic development professional for nearly 25 years. Following her graduation from the University of Texas and Masters program at the University of St. Thomas, Barbra helped communities across Texas and Arizona revitalize their downtown areas and aging commercial districts. Her grassroots community-driven approach has helped cities engage residents, merchants, public officials and future investors in the creation of downtown plans with broad-based support, such as her revitalization efforts in downtown Houston. In addition, her experience with business attraction and retention programs has been recognized in Goodyear, Arizona, where she was responsible for more than 3 million square feet of commercial development. She served as the International Council of Shopping Center’s State Alliance Co-Chair for Arizona/New Mexico and then Georgia. As Director of Economic Development in College Park, Georgia, she assisted in the formation of the first community improvement district surrounding Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and assisted the creation of the city’s first entrepreneurial development center which is a public-private partnership effort to assist start-ups. Most recently, Barbra served as Director of Economic Development & Tourism in Henderson, Nevada, from 2013-2019 where she was successful in recruiting companies like Barclays and the NFL’s Raiders.
