Chris Eastoe spent his formative years in Tasmania, where he grew up on a sheep farm. He decided on geology as a career. In 1979, he earned a Ph.D. in Economic Geology from the University of Tasmania. In 1975, he was awarded a Rotary Foundation Fellowship, and spent a year in France. Starting in 1982, he worked at the University of Arizona, retiring in 2015. Since then he has worked collaboratively with colleagues in China, India, the USA and Mexico.
