My Rotary Story
Rotary has provided an amazing international adventure for my family.
My family has hosted four Rotary Youth Exchange students: Papu from India, Glanz from the Philippines, Aya from Japan and Gabby from Ecuador.
My daughter Stephanie became a Rotary Youth Exchange student to Latacunga, Ecuador in 2006-2007. When her older sister Michelle and I visited Stephanie in the spring of 2007, we were warmly received by her host family and sponsoring Rotary club. Stephanie’s host father drove us up to see the active volcano Cotopaxi, the second highest summit in Ecuador. We climbed into Quilota, the most western volcano in the Andes, to see the water filled lake. We hiked to the thunderous Casado del Pailon waterfall in the Amazon. We enjoyed the beaches of Esmeralda and the golden cathedrals in the capital of Quito. We fellowshipped and sang at their Rotary club meeting.
In 2006, my family had the opportunity to attend the Rotary International conference in Denmark/Sweden and also to participate in a unique Rotary three-day pre-conference home stay program sponsored by the Otterup Rotary Club of Denmark. Even before the conference we experienced the extended hand of Rotary friendship in their club meeting. We also visiting their homes and places of business, received a VIP welcome at their City Hall (where they flew the American flag for us), and toured the home of Hans Christian Andersen.
