As the COVID-19 crisis continues to affect our world and our local community, youth experiencing homelessness are being faced with even more obstacles. Many who have been living with friends or relatives are being told to leave due to concerns about the outbreak. With schools closed, many who are graduating this year are struggling to finish their coursework via packets, phones, or borrowed computers. Most who have jobs are unable to work due to shutdowns or reduced hours. Helping youth on their own is the mission of YOTO.

Bethany Neumann has been the Director of Development at Youth On Their Own (YOTO) since March 2018. YOTO is a dropout-prevention organization that, since 1986, has been helping youth experiencing homelessness in our community graduate from high school and go on to lead productive lives. Originally from Cleveland, Bethany went to the University in Chicago and has since lived and worked in the fields of education and nonprofit development in a number of different cities and countries around the world, including Taiwan and Guatemala. Tucson has been her permanent address through most of these peregrinations, and she is grateful for the opportunity to be working for such a worthwhile organization in such an amazing city. She takes great pride in reporting about concrete ways to help young people, as well as ways to spread the word and advocate for this underserved population both now and after the pandemic has ended.
