As educators who have worked with literacy and the creative arts though out their careers, Prisca and Ray Martens will discuss their work with students in reading, writing, and art along with the insights they’ve gained along the way. Their presentation will also overview how they will share this synergistic integration with teachers and students in the Catalina Rotary Creative Arts Center at the Boys and Girls Club of Tucson.

Prisca and Ray Martens have recently retired and moved to Arizona from Maryland where they both taught at Towson University. Prisca received her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and taught literacy courses in the Elementary Education Department. Ray received his Ed.D. from Arizona State University and taught art education courses in the Art Department there. They have worked together for many years to bring art, reading, and writing together to nurture children’s literacy, creativity, and learning. Prisca and Ray have published numerous articles on their work. They can be reached at prisca@martensart.net and ray@martensart.net.
