Southeast Arizona is a birding paradise, home to a diverse array of sought-after species that attract bird enthusiasts from around the world. This presentation highlights the “most wanted” birds in the region—those iconic, rare, or unique species that every birder dreams of spotting.
This talk will highlight species such as the Elegant Trogon, Montezuma Quail, and Violet-crowned Hummingbird, while discussing their distinct characteristics, habitats, and behaviors. The presentation will also cover the best seasons and locations to observe these birds, from riparian areas to mountain canyons. Additionally, we’ll touch on some of the conservation and the restoration work Tucson Audubon does to help create and protect habitat.
Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a newcomer, this talk will inspire you to explore Southeast Arizona’s stunning landscapes in search of these incredible birds!
Donito Burgess was born and raised in deep southeast Texas, but after many excursions to the Big Bend region, the desert had his heart. Drawn by the Sonoran Desert’s rugged landscapes and diverse wildlife, he and his family made the decision to relocate to Tucson, where they now call the desert home.
Whether he’s leisurely strolling through an urban park or navigating the rugged terrain of a remote canyon, Donito’s passion for birds and the unique environment of Southeast Arizona knows no bounds. As the Community Engagement Manager at the Tucson Audubon Society, he finds joy in sharing his deep-seated love for the desert and its avian inhabitants with birders of all skill levels. Currently residing on the east side of Tucson with his wife, Whitney, and their two sons, Brooks and Easton, Donito strives to inspire others to embrace the beauty of the natural world and to cultivate a deep sense of stewardship for the environments that sustain us all.
