Kentucky Derby Day
The buzz around town immediately following the 134th
running of the Kentucky Derby was . . . “What a great event!” . . .
“Wow, a lot of fun!” . . . “The food and mint juleps were great!” .
. . “We can’t wait for next year!”
Two hundred Rotarians and guests attended the 2nd Annual Kentucky
Derby Day Party on May 3rd. It was a beautiful day – a good crowd,
bluegrass music, southern cooking, ladies in beautiful hats, and the
drama of the Kentucky Derby. A good time was had by all.
Seven thousand five hundred dollars were raised for Tucson’s Child
Language Center’s “Wings On Words” program, which provides critical
early intervention programs for preschool children with speech &
language disorders.
Partygoers benefited from some great bargains as a result of the
live and silent auctions. Folks walked away with some beautiful gift
baskets, a week at a cabin in Pinetop, a Lake Tahoe trip, expensive
jewelry, Kentucky Derby mementos and much more.
Not to be outdone, Bill and Lu Salisbury won our raffle to attend
the actual Kentucky Derby and Oaks races at Churchill Downs,
Louisville, Kentucky. They enjoyed the memorable weekend at which
time they were bestowed to the Order of Kentucky Colonels by
Kentucky Governor, Steve Beshear.
In the tradition of Catalina Rotary, the event not only raised funds
for the club’s charitable efforts in southern Arizona, but provided
great fellowship for all that attended.
